Civil War in Sierra Leone

The war began in 1991, when RUF led by Foday Sankoh attacked the towns in Sierra Leone along the border.

RUF targeted civilians and many people died in amputation.

In 1994, RUF took over diamond mines in Sierra Leone, but those areas were later liberated in 1995.

In 1999, Lome Peace Treaty was signed in Lome, Togo. However, RUF continued to violate the treaty, jeopardizing human rights.

On January 18, 2002 President Kabbah declared the civil war officially over.
